Preparing for your NEWBORN SESSION with Tiffany Edwards, Newborn & Childhood Photographer

Updated: Mar 27

Even though I still consider any baby photographed within the first 3 months a newborn session and whilst I do photograph babies at all ages and stages, the sweet spot for newborn photography is at just 10 - 14 days old.

Brand new babies within their first two weeks of life stay much more curled up, are smaller, sleepier and just overall more posable.

In the weeks before your session...

Take the time to consider any themes or color preferences you might have or ideas for sentimental items to incorporate and share them and any favorite poses and inspo images with your photographer.

Also, give consideration to whether you prefer in-home or studio session options. Outdoor availability is completely weather contingent for Newborns.

In the days before your session...

Finalize and gather outfits for baby and the rest of the family, anyone who is participating in the session. If it's something you can do ahead of time to make session day run smoothly, do it! From trimming fingernails and locating specific jewelry you'd like to wear - cross out whatever you can from that list a little early and you'll be glad you did.

Examples of real sentimental items I've had clients bring to baby's session in the past include a Christmas tree skirt, handmade baby blankets, various jewelry, wedding veil, burp cloth, leather jacket, saddle, photos. the list goes on!

The day before...

Bath for baby, double check the diaper bag is fully stocked with all the essentials for studio sessions, pack and prepare sentimental items and anything else you plan to bring (or have handy, if I'm coming to you) for session day.

Plan to feed baby on his or her normal schedule but be prepared to "top off" baby before or during the session as needed, it's normal to take breaks! If baby takes a pacifier, please have one readily available for use during the session.

Session Day...

By following the recommendations made here, you should be going into session day as ready as you can be! Please aim to arrive (or be ready upon my arrival for in-home sessions) right at the scheduled session time, or up to just 5 minutes early. You will get a day-of session reminder to your email.

For in-home sessions, don't forget to bump up the heat!

It has to be really warm for baby to be naked and stay sleepy for posed images.
